The time period ranging from December 25 to January 25 is the most dangerous period as far as heart attacks are concerned, the study by a group of the capital’s leading doctors revealed.

Last year, hospitals in the city witnessed 25-30 per cent increase in heart ailments during the winter season.

The heart has to work harder in winters because blood vessels constrict to help the body maintain its heat, also respiratory diseases such as flu and asthma are on a high in the season, which causes load on the heart and also because of high blood pressure,” according to Dr Umesh Gupta, senior cardiologist at Umkal Hospital.

During winters, people also tend to consume more alcohol in order to keep warm, which also aggravates pressure on the heart, he said.

As a precautionary measure, he recommends that heart patients avoid outdoor exercises and cut down on liquor consumption to an occasional peg.

Health experts also hold the view that Seasonal Affective Disorder (winter blues) is one of the many negative effects of winter on one’s health, specially on those with heart ailments.
