California‘s sevenfold increase in autism is most likely due to environmental exposures, according to scientists. A new study advocates a nationwide shift in autism research to focus on environmental factors such as pesticides, viruses and chemicals in household products.

Throughout the U.S., the numbers of autistic children have increased dramatically over the past 15 years. More than 3,000 new cases of autism were reported in California in 2006, compared with 205 in 1990.

Many medical officials argued that the rise was due to changes in diagnoses or migration patterns rather than a real rise in the disorder. But the new study concludes that those factors cannot explain most of the increase in autism.

Researchers analyzed 17 years of state data that tracks developmental disabilities. Migration to the state had no effect, and changes in how and when doctors diagnose the disorder can explain less than half of the increase.

It is possible that a pregnant woman’s exposure to chemical pollutants, particularly metals and pesticides, could be altering a developing baby’s brain structure, triggering autism. Many parent groups also believe that childhood vaccines could be responsible.

One reply on “What Really Causes Autism?”

It is amazing that our science can’t figure the “new” illnesses out. Autism is a mystery that they want to blame on genes or the parents or now the environment. Allergies are the same. We have an epidemic of food allergies, too. Both of these epidemics got much worse in the last 5-6 years but mainly among young children. Suddenly we either have more pollution which is thought to be the cause of autism or we are too clean which is given for the cause of the food allergies. Our scientists can look at live blood and give us details about the body’s immune response but still they have no clue about these illnesses. Many autistic children have food allergies. I can’t say what exactly causes autism but I really believe that if you inject someone with food protein along with aluminum which enhances the body’s immune response to protein, that you create a food allergy. 170 years ago a Frenchman injected egg white into animals. The first time – no problem. The second time – they died. Vaccine manufacturers use a mixture of vegetable and animal oils in the vaccine adjuvant. These ingredients do not have to appear on the package insert because it is a protected trade secret. Food allergies are affecting about 8% of young children. 1 in 70 people in the UK have a serious peanut allergy. (Peanut oil is one of the many oils listed as an ingredient in vaccine adjuvants – read the patents.) In 1960 children received 1-2 vaccines. Now children get 48 doses of 14 vaccines by age six and 53-56 doses of 15 or 16 vaccines by age 12. How can scientists effectively study vaccines when they don’t know all of the ingredients? Are we playing food allergy roulette every time we vaccinate our children?
