This site tells us about what Panchakarma is.

Our Natural State:-

According to Ayurveda, our natural state is one of health, happiness and an inner sense of well-being. Health is defined as the body being clear of toxins, the mind is at peace, emotions are calm and happy, wastes are efficiently eliminated and organs are functioning normally. In a busy, stressful and toxic world, our physical and mental systems accumulate toxins causing deterioration in bodily functioning. This eventually weakens our systems, which opens the door for chronic, degenerative, and non-specific diseases to develop. These can evolve into serious specific diseases, ultimately damaging an individual’s health and wellness.

Panchakarma can help by reversing these negative effects of daily living. It can restore your natural state of health and wellness by cleansing your body of toxins, bringing balance into your system and improving bodily function. It can also help you sustain this process by making positive changes in lifestyle.

The Panchakarma therapeutic process appears quite simple in its application. However, its effects are powerful and long-lasting. Panchakarma is a unique, natural, holistic, health-giving series of therapeutic treatments that cleanse the body’s deep tissues of toxins, open the subtle channels, bring life-enhancing energy thereby increasing vitality, inner peace, confidence and well-being.

How to Do Panchakarma at Home:
One can try this ayurvedic cleanse at home and restore his or her body, mind, and spirit to a natural state of balance.

If some one like a glimpse into the benefits of panchakarma (ayurveda’s ancient cleansing and rejuvenation practice) without the expense of going to a clinic, he or she can try this home version, which ayurvedic expert Vasana Lad recommends in The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies. Avoid this program during pregnancy, having weakness, anemic, or debilitated. Otherwise, it’s safe for most healthy people.

To start with:
First, one needs to determine his or her ayurvedic constitution, which is composed of the three doshas. In most people, one dosha is primary, another is secondary, and the third is least prominent.

One should spend time in resting, walking in nature, reading light material, and practicing gentle yoga and meditation.

Ideally he or she should undertake this mini-program during a weeklong vacation so that one can escape his or her daily grind. If one has a hectic family life, rent a cabin in the woods where you can observe silence. Avoid excess stimulation (including sex) and spend your time resting, walking in nature, reading light material, and practicing gentle yoga and meditation. At the minimum, do days 1 to 3 during the workweek and days 4 to 8 over a long weekend.

A word of caution: According to Lad, this program releases old, unresolved emotions stored in our deep connective tissue. To cope, he says, avoid the urge to resuppress them and practice regular meditation to soothe heart and soul.
