For the past 24 years Professor Peter Elwood and colleagues from the University of Wales have followed the dietary habits of some 2,500 men from South Wales, aged between 45 and 59 years.

Called the Caerphilly Collaborative Heart Disease Study, the research (1) (published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition) showed that the men who drank more than a pint of milk each day reduced their risk of heart disease and stroke by 30%, compared with those who drank no milk.

Other research has shown that three portions of dairy a day, in combination with 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, can lower blood pressure – without resorting to medication.

Some research suggests that drinking more milk may help some people lose weight. But how? A new study published in Obesity Research suggests that drinking milk while dieting may help you double the amount of weight you lose. The research also suggests milk may help you lose the fat and keep the muscle – even if you’re not trying to lose weight. This is third clinical trial in the last two years that has reinforced milk’s role in enhancing weight loss efforts when included as part of a reduced-calorie diet
