Healthy lifestyle habits should begin before you conceive a child and continue throughout the entire pregnancy. Five key steps should be followed during pregnancy. They are to eat right, get plenty of rest and relaxation, exercise moderately, avoid smoking and alcohol, and visit your doctor regularly.
Pregnancy should not be an excuse for indulging in rich, fattening “junk” foods, nor is it a time for strict dieting. Every expectant mother needs a quality diet to provide her developing baby with all the essential vitamins and nutrients. Milk and milk products – a must during pregnancy – supply the mother and the baby with calcium, protein, vitamin B2 and phosphorous. Iron-rich foods, including red meat, prunes, dried beans and peas, are also important for developing a healthy baby. Pregnant women may want to alter their eating patterns. Eating several small meals a day – rather than three large ones – may help reduce fatigue, make overeating less likely, and control nausea in pregnant women.Drink fresh water more than you drink in normal time and eat fresh vegetable & fruits.
Plenty of sleep and relaxation are important for pregnant women. A pregnant woman needs from eight to 10 hours of sleep a night, and a nap in the afternoon can always make you feel better. Smoking during pregnancy has been linked to serious problems such as miscarriages and smaller birth weights in newborn babies. Women who drink heavily during pregnancy risk giving birth to a child with a condition known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Some FAS babies are born with facial abnormalities, poor brain coordination, mental retardation and abnormal growth patterns. If you smoke or drink alcohol and are pregnant or thinking of having a baby, think of the effects your bad habits may have on your baby and commit yourself to quitting – at least during the nine months of pregnancy.
