Background: No studies have examined whether increased consumption of oat cereal, rich in soluble fiber, favorably alters lipoprotein particle size and number.

Objective: Examined the effects of large servings of either oat or wheat cereal on plasma lipids, lipoprotein subclasses, lipoprotein particle diameters, and LDL particle number.

Design: Thirty-six overweight men aged 50–75 y were randomly assigned to consume daily for 12 wk either oat or wheat cereal providing 14 g dietary fiber/d. Before and after the intervention, plasma lipid and lipoprotein subclasses were measured with proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and whole-body insulin sensitivity was estimated with the frequently sampled intravenous-glucose-tolerance test.

Results: Time-by-treatment interactions (P < 0.05) for LDL cholesterol (oat: -2.5%; wheat: 8.0%), small LDL cholesterol (oat: -17.3%; wheat: 60.4%), LDL particle number (oat: -5.0%; wheat: 14.2%), and LDL:HDL cholesterol (oat: -6.3%; wheat: 14.2%) were observed. Time-by-treatment interactions were nearly significant for total cholesterol (oat: -2.5%; wheat: 6.3%; P = 0.08), triacylglycerol (oat: -6.6%; wheat: 22.0%; P = 0.07), and VLDL triacylglycerol (oat: -7.6%; wheat: 2.7%; P = 0.08). No significant time-by-treatment interactions were observed for HDL cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol subclasses, or LDL, HDL, and VLDL particle diameters. Insulin sensitivity did not change significantly with either intervention.

Conclusions: The oat compared with the wheat cereal produced lower concentrations of small, dense LDL cholesterol and LDL particle number without producing adverse changes in blood triacylglycerol or HDL-cholesterol concentrations. These beneficial alterations may contribute to the cardioprotective effect of oat fiber.

Very Low Calorie Diets (VLCD)

Although Very Low Calorie Diets (VLCD) taken during drastic dieting can show some positive effect for short-term weight-loss, they are not satisfactory for long-term maintenance of body weight. On a more serious note are   Inflammation of intestine and pancreas, low BP, cardiac arrhythmias, kidney stones and if prolonged for a longer period can lead to death. Those with clinical complications like diabetes, cardiac ailments or metabolic disorders, should remember to avoid VLCDs as the consequences may be detrimental and aggravate their problems.

A protein that prevents blood vessels from forming in the cornea could become the basis of new treatments for cancer and macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness in the elderly, scientists said.

The team of international researchers identified a protein called sVEGFR-1 and found that when levels are low, blood vessels begin to form in the eye, impairing vision.

They believe therapies that boost levels of the protein could prevent the formation of blood vessels, which are a component in the spread of cancers and the cause of macular degeneration.

“We have discovered what it is that keeps the cornea clear. It has no blood vessels — which allows us to see,”said Dr Jayakrishna Ambati, of the University of Kentucky in Lexington who headed the research team.

The cornea is the transparent front part of the eye. Scientists have wondered for centuries why it has no blood vessels.

What causes blood vessels to form is a fundamental question for vision and also for diseases like cancer.

“This finding teaches us what keeps the cornea clear and gives us the ability to exploit it in other diseases, both in the eye and systemically because now you have a protein that blocks blood vessel growth that the body itself makes,”added Ambati, who reported the findings in the journal Nature.

The lack of blood vessels has been perplexing researchers because the cornea contains vast amounts of a chemical called VEGF-A, which promotes blood vessel growth.

The new protein discovered by Ambati and researchers from the US, Japan, Italy and Australia provides the answer. It is produced in the cornea and acts like a mop, absorbing VEGF-A which would otherwise make blood vessels grow.
