How to Choose Pain Medication

Not every pain killer is created equal. Find out the differences between common over-the-counter medications and discover what’s really in your medicine cabinet.

Two Groups of Pain Medications are there:
Over-the-counter medications fall into one of two groups. The first are known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This group includes aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and ketoprofen. Ibuprofen goes by the brand names Advil and Motrin. Naproxen is better known as Aleve. Ketoprofen is sold as Orudis. These drugs work by preventing your body from producing chemicals that cause fever and swelling. Doctors recommend them for minor to moderate discomfort due to headaches and muscle aches, colds and the flu, menstrual pain, arthritis, and toothaches.

The other category includes just one drug: acetaminophen. It’s also known as Tylenol. No one is sure exactly how it works. One theory is that it keeps the brain’s pain centers from receiving nerve signals. It’s good for fever and mild to moderate pain from headaches, including tension headaches and migraines, as well as back pain, sore throat, arthritis, and shingles. The main difference between acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is that acetaminophen does not reduce inflammation. That means it won’t help with aches caused by swelling due to sports injuries, for example.

Some Warnings Regarding Pain Medication:

In general, each one of these drugs is safe for most people when taken as directed. There are some exceptions. Don’t give aspirin to children or teenagers because it can cause Reye’s syndrome, a rare life threatening condition. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs shouldn’t be taken by people who have ulcers or take blood thinning drugs, or by pregnant women. Acetaminophen is usually okay for pregnant women looking for short-term pain relief. In addition, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs shouldn’t be given to children under 12 without first consulting a doctor. While acetaminophen is considered to be safe for children, pay close attention to dosage. Acetaminophen overdose is a common cause of drug-related deaths in children and adolescents.

Choose a Pain Medication:
So with all these choices, how should you decide which over-the-counter pain medication is best for you? It partly depends on your symptoms. They all help with pain and fever, but since acetaminophen doesn’t work for inflammation, you’ll need to use one of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling. Because people respond in different ways to each of these drugs, most doctors suggest that you stick with the one that has worked for you in the past. That increases the chances that the drug will be effective and lowers the odds that you will suffer any side effects.

So do you need a cabinet full of over-the-counter pain medications?
Not really. You’re probably better off with just the one or two that work best for you. And if you’ve inadvertently collected more than a couple different kinds, some of them have probably expired anyway. So it may be worth checking to see what you’ve got. And what you can toss out.

Natural and Ayurvedic Pain relief Medication is most of the time hermless and can be safely used even without consulting any one.The main advantage is that they have no side effect.

Pyorrhoea, or periodontal disease, to give it a proper medical term, is disease of the gums. It is one of the most widely prevalent diseases. It affects the membrane surrounding the roots of the teeth and lead to loosening of the teeth, us formation, and shrinkage of the gum. This disease is the primary cause for tooth loss among adults….click & see

Symptoms:

The gums become tender, and on pressing, pus oozes out along the margin of the teeth. Us from the cavities continually find its way into the stomach. When the disease is far advanced, the gums become swollen, and the stomach being sosed with increasing quantities of pus, does not function properly. A sepsis may appear in various forms, digestion gets disturbed, liver trouble sets in, and the whole system is adversely affected.

Root cause:
Pyorrhoea is triggered by bacterial activity .A thin layer of harmful bacteria is continuously building up on our teeth. If it is not removed by tooth cleansing, especially after meals, it forms an organized mass on the tooth surface in a short time. This is referred to as bacterial plaque. When accumulated, bacteria in plaque produce many toxins, which irritate the gums, causing them to become inflamed, tender and prone to bleeding easily. The bacterial activity is however, facilitated by the lowered vitality of the system. Other factors contributing to the development of pyorrhea include chemical irritants in the mouth, incorrect brushing, stagnation of food particles, and improper use of tooth picks.

Untreated gingivitis will develop into true periodontal disease. The term pyorrhoea is often used for advanced periodontal disease. There are three easily defined stages of periodontitis:

A) Early periodontitis:- In this stage plaque has been allowed to build up around the gums, and under the edges of the gums. This causes swelling of the edges of the gums and the gum pulls away from the tooth, allowing more harmful bacteria into this “pocket”.

B) Moderate Periodontitis :-At this stage the gum is detaching from the tooth further down the root, and the pockets are difficult to clean with normal methods. The detached gum spreads down beyond the top of the bone which is starting to get eaten away by the bacteria and toxins. This can still be treated non surgically.

C) Advanced Periodontitis :-The gums receed down the tooth –so called long in the tooth appearance. The pockets deepen and fill with pus . The teeth will become loose. You are quite likely to have severe bad breath and blood in your mouth when you eat most firm foods. This stage may need to be treated surgically.

Can antibiotics cure gum disease?

An antibiotic can help if you have a very painful swelling where pus has formed between the teeth, but generally we do not use antibiotics in the treatment of gum disease. We may however recommend localised antibiotic treatments for particular areas of your mouth. For example periochips, elyzol, gengigel, dentomycin. These are not a cure but can help us control an acute phase of gum disease.

Can I prevent gum disease?
In almost all cases the answer is yes. Good oral hygiene, use of dental floss or interdental brushes will prevent plaque building up. Regular dental examinations are also vital to ensure any gum disease is found at an early stage. To check if gum disease is present you will often find we gently probe your gums with a special blunt probe to see if their is any bleeding.

How Women Can Avoid Heart Disease

New American Heart Association guidelines could help women lower their long-term risk of heart disease.

The guidelines, which are further-reaching than those released in 2004, focus on problems associated with aging rather than immediate risk.

Women are less likely to have heart attacks and strokes early in life, possibly due to the protective effects of estrogen. But while short-term risk is low for many women, over the course of a woman’s life, she will have a nearly one-in-three chance of dying of heart disease.

The guidelines reaffirmed the importance of diet, exercise, controlling weight and blood pressure, limiting salt intake and quitting smoking. They also recommended not relying on vitamins, not using hormone therapy or selective estrogen modulators as a heart attack prevention method, and not taking aspirin for heart attack prevention until after the age of 65.

These new recommendations come at a time when scientists estimate some 38 million American women are living with heart disease, and a growing number of health care professionals are coming around to the opinion they should be preventing and treating conditions that may happen over the course of a patient’s lifetime, and not just until the next diagnosis.

It’s important to remember that any diet you follow should be tailored according to the foods your body burns best, based on its unique metabolic type. High-fat and high-protein food choices could be the worst or the best choice for you, it all depends on your metabolic type.

Additionally, along with the many safe and effective lifestyle changes women can make to reduce their risks of heart problems, it’s also important to remind you the primary reason older women die from heart disease: After menopause, women stop menstruating and begin gaining excess iron. High iron levels will cause serious free radical damage. It is one of the easiest items to check for and FAR more of an important risk factor than cholesterol levels.

A simple blood test that measures ferritin levels can determine if your iron levels are dangerously elevated. It is strongly advised to have your doctor perform this simple and relatively inexpensive test for you.

The safest and most optimal way to eliminate any problems with iron: Donating your blood one to six times a year, depending on the amount of iron in your system.

Of course, normalizing your fasting insulin level is also another powerful and effective way to not only reduce your risk of heart disease, but also cancer. While you are getting your ferritin level done, please make sure you have a fasting insulin level done. If your level is above five you have some homework to do to lower it.

Moderate drinking may prolong life

Moderate drinking may lengthen your life, while too much may shorten it, researchers from Italy report. Their conclusion is based on pooled data from 34 large
studies involving more than one million people and 94,000 deaths……..click & see

According to the data, drinking a moderate amount of alcohol    up to four drinks per day in men and two drinks per day in women  reduces the risk of death from any cause by roughly 18%, the team reports in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

However, “things radically change” when consumption goes beyond these levels, study leader Augusto Di Castelnuovo, from Catholic University of Campobasso, said in a statement. Men who have more than four drinks per day and women who have more than two drinks per day not only lose the protection that alcohol affords, but they increase their risk of death, the data indicate.

The reason why men are protected at up to four drinks per day, while women lose the
protection after two glasses has to do with how men and women metabolize alcohol,
researchers say. It’s been shown that when men and women who drink the same amount of alcohol, women experience higher blood alcohol levels than men.

Therefore, women who consume more than two glasses of alcohol per day may be at increased risk for diseases of the liver and certain types of cancer.

“Our findings, while confirming the hazards of excess drinking, indicate potential windows
of alcohol intake that may confer a net beneficial effect of moderate drinking, at least in
terms of survival,” the Italian team concludes.

“Heavy drinkers should be urged to cut their consumption
, but people who already regularly consume low to moderate amounts of alcohol should be encouraged to continue,” they add. The manner in which alcohol is consumed also appears to be important.

“Little amounts, preferably during meals, this appears to be the right way,” said Giovanni
de Gaetano of Catholic University, another author on the study
.
