2-Drug process to heal the heart

The damaging effects of a heart attack may be reversible, say researchers who have successfully used drugs to boost new heart tissue and blood vessel growth.

Treating the hearts of rats that had experienced simulated heart attacks, the team found the repaired hearts beat as well as undamaged hearts even after several months.

This is a dramatic recovery,”says Felix Engel, paediatrician at the Children’s Hospital in Boston who led the study. “A human with this kind of heart muscle damage would be dead.”

Under normal conditions, when blood flow is prevented from reaching the heart during a heart attack, the tissue dies, forming irreparable scar tissue. To re-grow the damaged areas in rats, Engel and colleagues used two drugs: one that overcomes a natural inhibitor of cell division within the heart; and one that encourages blood vessel growth.

The researchers studied 120 rats, some with heart attacks simulated by permanently closing off one of the coronary arteries that feed the heart muscle. Rats that received both drugs showed the greatest improvements.

Yibin Wang, a physiologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, US, who collaborated with Engel on a preliminary study, praised the new work but questioned some of its claims.

“The bottom line of this study is great,”Wang said, “they found a way to break the barrier of cardiac regeneration. But it’s very challenging to claim all of the benefits they observe are truly due to regeneration.”

Wang noted that heart function began increasing just one day after the heart attack   too soon, in his opinion, to be attributed to regeneration.

He suspects the damaged cells never died, but were protected by the drugs, which were applied at the same time as the simulated attack.

Why some live 110 years or more

A group of researchers has set up a foundation to study the members of a rare and exclusive club: people who live to be older than 110……..CLICK & SEE

The Supercentenarian Research Foundation hopes to identify why these people live so long, develop strategies to help combat the effects of aging and improve the quality of life of the very old.

It is estimated that there are about 300 people worldwide who are 110 years old or older, but not all of those people have had their ages verified through public documents.

As of this week the foundation, based in Pittsburgh, reported that there were 76 people in the world – 66 women and 10 men – who were verified to be 110 or older.

“The longer we wait, the more they’re going to die and we will lose that information,” said Dr Stephen Coles, the foundation’s treasurer and a researcher who has studied the elderly as part of the Los Angeles Gerontology Research Group.

Coles said demographers have shown that the number of people reaching 100 years old is growing exponentially, while few people live to be older than 110. Researchers are turning to science to try to explain why.

The oldest person ever whose age was authenticated was Jeanne Louise Calment, who lived to 122 years and 164 days, the foundation said. She was born on February 21, 1875, and died at a nursing home in Arles in southern France on August 4, 1997.

Stanley R Primmer, the foundation’s president, said there have only been seven autopsies of supercentenarians that the group knows of. He said the foundation is in the process of gathering tissues from the very elderly so they can look for clues to longevity.

Environmental pollution and growth of different Disesses

This is most talked about subject in today’s world. Many studies in people have demonstrated an association between environmental exposure and certain diseases or other health problems. Examples include radon and lung cancer; arsenic and cancer in several organs; lead and nervous system disorders; disease-causing bacteria such as E. coli O157: H7 (e.g., in contaminated meat and water) and gastrointestinal illness and death; and particulate matter and aggravation of heart and respiratory diseases.

To understand the relationship between health and the environment, scientists study a series of events that begins with the release of a pollutant into the environment and may end with the development of disease in a person or a population.

I do wander whether there will come a time when we can no longer afford our westfulness-chemical waste in rivers, metal waste everywhere, and attomic wastes burried deep into the earth or sink into the sae.

Pollution is nothing but the action of enviromental contamination with man made waste. This includes mainly land, water and air.Pollution comes in various forms including the lesser known noise., light and thermal pollution.

Growth of world population, advancement of science and technology and our greed to become more powerful has already brought us to such a stage that from here we can never go back. So, all the time we are pulling our beautiful world with its flora and fauna to the devastrative grave. YES, WE ALL KNOW IT FOR SURE, THAT ALL THE BEAUTIFUL CREATIONS WILL BE LOST SOME DAY.

But we can still hope to extend its destraction time to few more generations ,if every human of the world gets conscious from today and starts doing something to save the environment as much as one can do.It may be as little as to switching off your room light or fan when you donot need it.If we are conscious today, our next generation will also be more conscious tomorrow and that way only we will extend the period of devestration and the world will be a better living place for few more years for our next generations.
