Conceiving Made Easier

For  Indian couples who have been trying unsuccessfully to have children, a new line of help is now available. Called the conception kit, it aims to optimise a couple’s chances of pregnancy using various scientific charts and devices.

The comprehensive fertility kit won’t help couples who have complex infertility problems, but it just may be useful to couples who have too much stress and too little time to keep trying for babies. Career women can, for instance, use the kit’s ovulation chart to map out their fertile dates of the month. And for men who hate visiting infertility clinics for semen collection, the self-insemination kit may be a discreet option.

“There is no denying that no-sex no-baby couples are an urban trend,” says infertility specialist Aniruddha Malpani, whose clinic is making the kit available in India. Hrishikesh Pai, who consults at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, points out that stress affects conception. Either the couple is too tired to try or they try on the not-so-fertile days.

“Moreover, couples come too late to the doctor when only infertility treatments can help,” says Dr Malpani.

Many a times, the couple just puts off visiting doctors because of the stigma attached to infertility, which incidentally affects one in 10 couples.

The fertility kit can come handy for such couples. Priced at Rs 4,400, it has an ovulation chart, a non-toxic condom to collect semen (that has to be deposited at the infertility clinic within an hour), a penile vibrator for men with serious problems like spinal injuries or the like and a self-insemination kit.

The conception kit is not a new idea. The West has several devices available as single devices or in packages. In fact, the US market this year witnessed the launch of the first US FDA-approved conception kit. Priced at $300, it has been humorously referred to as “baby in a box” and claims to have helped 24% of its users conceive.

Culling Out The Weeds

Mind Over Matter
The power of the mind is a curious thing, because it is so powerful yet so difficult to control sometimes. We find ourselves thinking a certain way, knowing that this thought may be creating trouble for us yet we find it difficult to stop. For example, many people have the experience of getting sick at the same time every year or every time they go on a plane. They may even be aware that their beliefs impact their experiences, so continue to think they will get sick and then they do.

Sometimes we need to get sick in order to process something or move something through our bodies. But often we get sick, or feel exhausted, because we do not  make the effort to galvanize the power of our minds in the service of our physical health, which is one of its most important functions. We really can use it to communicate to our bodies, yet we often regard the two as separate entities that have little to do with one another.

Knowing this, we have the power to create physical health and mental health, simply by paying attention to the tapes running in our minds. Once we hear ourselves, we have the option to let that tape keep running or to make a new recording. We harness the power of the mind in our defense when we choose supportive, healing words that foster good health and high spirits. All we need to do is remember to tend the field of our mind with the attentive and loving hand of a master gardener tending her flower beds, culling out the weeds so that the blossoms may come to fruition.

Many Toys Contain Dangerous Chemicals

Tests on 1,200 children’s items revealed that more than one-third contained lead and other potentially dangerous chemicals such as mercury, cadmium and arsenic.

The study, directed by the Environmental Health Project of the Ecology Center in Michigan, also found that jewelry products were the most likely to contain high levels of lead.

Other items, such as bedroom slippers, bath toys and card-game cases were also tainted, some with as much as five times the standard safety level of lead. One Hannah Montana card-game case, for instance, had lead levels of 3,056 parts per million.

The study was conducted to spur government officials to take action against tainted toys. Millions of toys, most of them made in China, have already been recalled in 2007.

Some Health Questions And Answers

Q: I like to study and do my homework while watching television or listening to music. But my mother disapproves of this and turns off the music or the TV. What is wrong with studying like that?
Rapidly moving television images exhaust brain chemicals needed for transmitting electrical signals

A: The proof of the pudding is in the eating. If you are doing well in your studies, your mother has no reason to complain. But if you are not, it probably means that the TV serials and the music are posing a distraction. In that case, your mother is right. Brain cells function by transmitting electrical signals that require biochemical reactions. Rapidly moving images like those on the TV screen saturate and exhaust these chemicals. The brain then needs time to recover. By the time you start to assimilate the knowledge in your textbooks, the chemicals may be temporarily depleted, leading to poor recall. Also, memory is better when reinforced by vision and sound. In this scenario, recalling what you have learnt from the book may be more difficult than remembering the nuances of the last soap watched.

White patch

Q: I have a white patch on my eyelid which I think is growing. It has been there for as long as I can remember. I am scared that it is leukoderma. There are no patches anywhere else. Please advise.

[amazon_link asins=’B01D3HBGRC,B00XP6ITX6,B01LXN446M’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’finmeacur-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’393df4a8-25d6-11e7-a23f-4bb7c85d75f1′]

A: A single white patch that has been there for a long time may be a birthmark. This grows larger as you grow bigger and older. If you ask your parents, or look at your childhood photos, you can ascertain if the patch was present at or soon after birth. A scar from an old burn or injury can also become hypopigmented and appear white. Leukoderma usually appears after the age of 10 years. The patches are multiple. A dermatologist will be able to make an accurate diagnosis. All these conditions are treatable so you need not worry.

A scoundrel

Q: My son lived at home until he went to college. We were strict parents and he got into engineering college on merit. We had to put him in a hostel as the college is an overnight train journey from our house. We, however, feel that he is running wild there and rapidly turning into a wastrel and scoundrel.

A: These are strong words to describe a boy who seems to have worked hard in school! Perhaps you could check his academic performance. The semester marks must be available by now. If his performance is as consistent as it was when he was in school  and living at home  then he may be just testing the waters. He is becoming an independent, mature young adult. If he is using drugs or misusing alcohol, rest assured there will be absenteeism, arrears and falling grades. These, and unprotected intercourse (unsafe sex), are the real hazards of college life.

Living in a hostel

Q: A girl in my daughter’s hostel developed brain fever and died. We are now worried.

A: Living in a hostel often exposes children to multiple disease-causing organisms, thanks to the close proximity to one another. Some of these are dangerous while others are harmless. “Brain fever” is a non-specific description and could be due to bacteria (meningitis) or viruses (encephalitis.). Vaccines are available only against Japanese B encephalitis, meningococcus, H Influenzae and pneumococcus infections. These should be given to prevent infection. Mundane diseases like jaundice and typhoid are commoner than brain fever. They too affect the health and well being of a child and can be prevented by immunisation. Before sending your child to a hostel, ensure that his or her schedule has been completed.

Itchy facial

Q: I developed black, itchy patches on my face after I went for a gold facial. I look worse than ever now.

[amazon_link asins=’B008P0H3SO,B00CQ7SHJQ,B019EX4G7Q,B010FHRA4G,B01KBRXVZW,B00HBISPME,B001IM5VT4,B01N9QS1HN,B01N0DS46S’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’finmeacur-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’6952c342-25d6-11e7-95a3-41f295585e40′]

A: Chemicals should be applied to the face with caution. This is a profit-oriented country, where everyone   from the supplier to the manufacturer   tries to cut corners and make a fast buck. The chemicals applied may have been adulterated or (more likely) you may have developed an idiosyncratic allergic reaction. Many allergic patches are photo sensitive, so avoid sunlight. Wash your face with unscented baby soap. Do not apply cosmetics or chemicals. Take a mild antihistamine to reduce the itching. If there is no improvement within a week, consult a dermatologist. You might need an ointment for local application.

Hoodia

Botanical Name :Hoodia gordonii
Family: Apocynaceae
Subfamily: Asclepiadoideae
Tribe: Stapeliae
Genus: Hoodia
Species: H. gordonii
Kingdom: Plantae
Order: Gentianales

Common Name:Hoodia

Habitat :Conservation status: Not evaluated. However, in part of its range (Namibia) it has been assessed as Lower Risk – Least Concern according to IUCN Red Data List categories (SANBI, 2002)  It grows in Very dry rocky environments to sandy river beds.

Description:

Hoodia is a genus of 13 species in the flowering plant family Apocynaceae, under the subfamily Asclepiadoideae. They are stem succulents, described as “cactiform” because of their remarkable similarity to the unrelated cactus family. They can reach up to 1m high and have large flowers, often with flesh colour and strong smell.

Many Hoodia species are protected plants, typical of the Namib Desert, ranging from Central Namibia to southern Angola, especially in plains and rocky areas. Common names include “Bushman’s Hat” and “Queen of the Namib”.

Several species are grown as garden plants, and one species, Hoodia gordonii, is being investigated for use as an appetite suppressant.

Hoodia gordonii is a leafless spiny succulent plant with medicinal uses. It grows naturally in South Africa and Namibia. The flowers smell like rotten meat and are pollinated mainly by flies. The indigenous Bushmen call this plant hoba.

Imagine not being hungry all day without feeling side effects typical of diet pills made from Hudia, like a racing heart or queasy stomach.

Medicinal uses:
The use of Hoodia has long been known by the indigenous populations of Southern Africa, who infrequently use these plants for treating indigestion and small infections.

In 1977, the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) isolated the ingredient in hoodia—now known as P57—which is responsible for its appetite-suppressant effect, and patented it in 1996. The CSIR then granted United Kingdom-based Phytopharm a license, and they collaborated with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer to isolate active ingredients from the extracts and look into synthesizing them for use as an appetite suppressant. Pfizer released the rights to the primary ingredient in 2002. Paul Hutson, associate professor in the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy, told the Wisconsin State Journal, “For Pfizer to release something dealing with obesity suggests to me that they felt there was no merit to its oral use”. Pfizer states that development on P57, the active ingredient of Hoodia, was stopped due to the difficulty of synthesizing P57. Jasjit Bindra, lead researcher for hoodia at Pfizer, states there were indications of unwanted effects on the liver caused by other components, which could not be easily removed from the supplement, adding “Clearly, hoodia has a long way to go before it can earn approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Until safer formulations are developed, dieters should be wary of using it.”

In 2002, CSIR officially recognized the San tribespeople’s rights over Hoodia, allowing them to take a percentage of the profits and any spin-offs resulting from the marketing of Hoodia.  Hoodia gordonii is a protected plant which may only be wild-harvested by individuals and the few companies who have been granted a license.

Some tribes in Namibia boil the Hoodia to treat various ailments with the brew. including severe abdominal cramps, hemorrhoids, tuberculosis, indigestion, hypertension and diabetes.

Current popular use is for weight control.  Within the hypothalamus, there are nerve cells that sense glucose sugar. When you eat, blood sugar goes up because of the food, these cells start firing and now you are full. What the Hoodia seems to contain is a molecule that is about 10,000 times as active as glucose. It goes to the mid-brain and actually makes those nerve cells fire as if you were full. But you have not eaten. Nor do you want to.

Published scientific conference abstracts (not peer reviewed) of research studies have reported that orally administered crude or partially purified extracts of four different Hoodia species reduced food intake and body weight and body fat of obese and, to a lesser extent, lean rats.  Other animal studies performed in South Africa reported weight loss due to appetite suppression from intake of hoodia (56^).  An unpublished 2-week clinical trial of P57, as a less purified extract, also found body fat loss, reduced energy intake, as well as lower blood sugar and triglycerides

Scientific study
There is no published scientific evidence that Hoodia works as an appetite suppressant in humans. The safety and/or effectiveness of Hoodia Gordonii as a dietary supplement must thus be considered as unsubstantiated.

Animal research on hoodia includes one published scientific study in which a purified extract of Hoodia Gordonii, known as P57, was injected directly into the brains of rats.  The author of the rat study said that P57 was easily broken down by the liver, so it might be hard to take in enough of it to ensure that it had an effect. MacLean cautioned that currently available supplements might be inadequate, stating “I question whether there is really enough of the active ingredient in there to do much.”

Richard M. Goldfarb, MD, a doctor and medical director of Bucks County Clinical Research in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, claims to have conducted a preliminary efficacy study of Hoodia gordonii on seven people and reports to have found it effective. This very small trial was reportedly sponsored by a Hoodia manufacturer and none of the findings were ever published in any peer-reviewed journal. Such information cannot be considered as evidence that hoodia is effective as a weight loss product.

Other medical weight loss experts remain skeptical and do not recommend hoodia to obese patients. Adrienne Youdim, MD, medical director of the Comprehensive Weight Loss Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Michael Steelman, MD, chairman of the board of trustees for the American Society of Bariatric Physicians says “There is no [published scientific] data to support its use.” In addition, the FTC recommends against the use of such diet products marketed with exaggerated claims
