Vitamin E linked To Lung Cancer

Taking high doses of vitamin E supplements can increase the risk of lung cancer, research suggests.

…………………………..High vitamin E doses were found to increase risk

The US study of 77,000 people found taking 400 milligrams per day long-term increased cancer risk by 28% – with smokers at particular risk

It follows warnings about similar risks of excessive beta-carotene use.

Writing in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, an expert said people should get their vitamins from fruit and veg.

“The jury’s still very much out on whether vitamin and mineral supplements can affect cancer risk”.… said Henry Scowcroft, Cancer Research UK

Dr Tim Byers, from the University of Colorado, said a healthy, balanced diet meant people took in a whole range of beneficial nutrients and minerals, which might help to reduce cancer risk.

The researchers followed people aged between 50 and 76 for four years and looked at their average daily use of vitamin C and folic acid, and vitamin E supplements.

Over the course of the study, 521 people developed lung cancer.

Smoking, family history and age all had unsurprisingly strong links to cancer risk.

And while neither vitamin C or folic acid use had any effect on lung cancer risk, vitamin E use did.

The researchers extrapolated their findings, and concluded that over a decade, there was an additional 7% increase in risk for every 100 milligrams taken per day.

The vitamin E trend was most prominent among smokers, but was not confined to them.

Vitamin E is known to be an antioxidant – protecting cells from molecules called free radicals.

But the US researchers speculate that, in high doses, it may also act as a pro-oxidant – causing oxidation and therefore damage to cells.

‘Toxic effects’

Dr Christopher Slatore of the University of Washington in Seattle, who led the study, said: “In contrast to the often assumed benefits or at least lack of harm, supplemental vitamin E was associated with a small increased risk of lung cancer.

“Future studies may focus on other components of fruits and vegetables that may explain the decreased risk of cancer that has been associated with fruit and vegetables.

“Meanwhile, our results should prompt clinicians to counsel patients that these supplements are unlikely to reduce the risk of lung cancer and may be detrimental.”

But Henry Scowcroft, senior science information officer at Cancer Research UK, said: “The jury’s still very much out on whether vitamin and mineral supplements can affect cancer risk.

“Some studies suggest a benefit, but many others show no effect and some, like this one, suggest they may even increase risk.”

He added: “Research repeatedly shows that a healthy, balanced diet can reduce your risk of some cancers while giving you all the vitamins you need.

“Quitting smoking remains the most effective way to avoid many cancers. There’s no diet, or vitamin supplement, that could ever counter the toxic effects of cigarette smoke.”

In 2002 a Finnish study of 29,000 male smokers found taking beta-carotene – which is converted into vitamin A in the body – was linked to an 18% increased risk of developing lung cancer

Home Remedy Can Reduces HIV Deaths

The use of a home-based anti- retroviral treatment could significantly reduce mortality among adults with HIV in poor nations, especially in Africa, according to a study released.

Anti-retroviral treatment (ART) is the most effective clinical intervention for reducing the death rate of people with HIV, but those in developing nations — where 90 per cent of those infected live — have limited access to the life- prolonging drugs.

The standard, triple-drug treatment is only available to about 10 per cent of those in need in sub-Saharan Africa, the international health officials said.

Barriers to treatment include a lack of funds, the high cost of the medication, a shortage of trained health care providers, and long distances between clinics and patients.

To be effective, ART programs require that patients take medication regularly, and be monitored for toxic reactions and opportunistic infections.

Jonathan Mermin of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Nairobi and his colleagues monitored a group of HIV patients and their families in rural Uganda through a phased series of treatments over a five-year period.

They began in 2001 by providing basic counseling, diarrhea prevention and hygiene education to 466 HIV-infected adults and 1481 households without any infected members over a five-month period.

In the second phase, a daily dose of antibiotics was administered to HIV patients to fight bacteria that take advantage of compromised immune systems.

Broccoli Sprouts Curb Bladder Cancer

Broccoli has always been known to fight cancer. Now, a new study has found that eating concentrated extract of freeze dried broccoli sprouts may curb the development of bladder tumours.

Dr. Yuesheng Zhang, PhD, lead researcher and professor of oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, said the study carried out in an animal model provides strong evidence that eating vegetables is beneficial in bladder cancer prevention.

The team led by Zhang tested the ability of the concentrate to prevent bladder tumours in five groups of rats.

The first was a control group, while the second group was given only the broccoli extract to test for safety. The remaining three groups were given a chemical, N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine (BBN) in drinking water, which induces bladder cancer.

Out of the three two were given the broccoli extract in diet, two weeks before the carcinogenic chemical was delivered.

The findings revealed that the control group and the group given only the extract developed no tumours, and there was no toxicity from the extract in the rats.

They found that nearly 96 per cent of animals given only BBN developed an average of almost two tumours each of varying sizes.

And about 74 per cent of animals given a low dose of the extract developed cancer, and the number of tumours per rat was 1.39. The group given the high dose of extract had even fewer tumours.

Though animals that had the most protection against development of bladder cancer were given high doses of the extract, Zhang said humans at increased risk for this cancer likely do not need to eat huge amounts of broccoli sprouts in order to derive protective benefits.

The report will appear in the March 1 issue of Cancer Research , a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Angioma

Definition:
Angiomas are benign tumors that are made up of small blood vessels. They usually appear at or near the surface of the skin. Some of the different types include spider angiomas, cherry angiomas, and angiokeratomas. The cause of most types of angiomas is not known. Cherry angiomas and are due to aging and do not have any known significance. Spider angiomas are more common in childhood and during pregnancy, and a few can appear on anyone. It is an abnormal collection of blood vessels near the surface of the skin. When present in large numbers, the may warn of liver damage. Angiokeratomas are an overgrowth of blood vessels and skin cells. They are not dangerous.

Angiomas do not need to be treated unless they bleed or are bothering one. They can be treated with electrodessication, liquid nitrogen or laser. All three types of treatment have similar amounts of discomfort and usually give a good cosmetic result. The dermatologist will recommend the most appropriate method if you desired treatment. Electrodessication consists of touching the skin with an electric needle and destroying the blood vessels, Liquid nitrogen is a cold gas that is sprayed on the skin with a spray gun or applied with a cotton swab. Laser uses a beam of concentrated light. Angiomas sometimes recur after treatment.
