Smoking ages skin, says study

CHICAGO: Smoking not only can wrinkle the face and turn it yellow  it can do the same to the whole body, researchers reported n Monday….click & see

The study, published in the Archives of Dermatology, shows that smoking affects the skin all over the body — even skin protected from the sun.

“We examined non-facial skin that was protected from the sun, and found that the total number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were linked with the amount of skin damage a person experienced,” Yolanda Helfrich of the University of Michigan, who led the study, said.

Goitre

[amazon_link asins=’B00FNOS1OA,B01JYFUA38′ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’finmeacur-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’96a16035-0d81-11e7-aa19-2b2793258cbe’]

A goitre (or goiter) (Latin struma), also called a bronchocele, is a swelling in the neck (just below Adam’s apple or larynx) due to an enlarged thyroid gland. The swelling of the gland in the neck becomes visible and the gland at times becomes exceedingly large, thereby causing difficulty in respiration and swallowing of foods and drinks.

CLICK & SEE THE PICTURES

Classification
They are classified in different ways:

A “diffuse goitre is a goitre that has spread through all of the thyroid (and is contrasted with a “simple goitre”, “single thyroid nodule” and multinodular goitre“).

“Toxic goitre” refers to goitre with hyperthyroidism. These are derived from inflammation, neoplasm, and some kinds of activating autoimmune disease (Grave’s disease).

“Nontoxic goitre” (associated with normal or low thyroid levels) refers to all other types (such as that caused by lithium or certain other autoimmune diseases).

Causes

The most common cause for goitre in the world is iodine deficiency (E01); this condition is commonly called endemic goitre. It is curable by mass food-supplementation with iodine (in the form of iodide or iodate), and today remains a problem only in the least affluent countries which lack economic resources to fortify foods with iodine as part of public health programs.

Other causes are:
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (E06.3)
Graves-Basedow disease (E05.0)
Juvenile goitre due to congenital hypothyroidism (E03.0)
Neoplasm of the thyroid
Thyroiditis (acute, chronic) (E06)
Side-effects of pharmacological therapy (E03.2)

Occurrence
Iodine is necessary for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine and thyroxine (T3 and T4). In conditions producing endemic goitre, when iodine is not available, these hormones cannot be made. In response to low thyroid hormones, the pituitary gland releases thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Thyroid stimulating hormone acts to increase synthesis of T3 and T4, but in excess it also causes the thyroid gland to grow in size as a type of compensation.

Goitre is more common among women, but this includes the many types of goitre caused by autoimmune problems, and not only those caused by simple lack of iodine
.

Treatment
Treatment for goitre may not be necessary if the goitre is not caused by disease and is small. Removal of the goitre may be necessary if it causes difficulty with breathing or swallowing. There is now an alternative to surgery in large goiters. Radioiodine therapy with or without the pre-injection of a synthetic thyroid stimulating hormone, TSH, can relieve obstruction and reduce the size of the goiter by 30-65%. But removal of certain types of diffuse goitre mentioned above will result in removing the entire thyroid as well. The complete removal of the thyroid gland destroys the body’s ability to produce thyroid hormone. In this case, supplements of oral thyroid hormone are necessary to avoid harm from hypothyroidism.

In ayurveda this is called gladanda.According to ayurveda this is caused by the aggravation of Kapha and diminution of pitta.

Kanchanara is the drug of choice for the treatment of this condition. The bark of this tree is given to the patient in the form or a decoction. It is administered in a dose of 30ml,twice daily on an empty stomach. Kanchanara Guggulu, which contains this drug as an important ingredient, is popularly used for the treatment of this disease. It is given in a dose of four tablets three times a day followed by milk or warm water.

Lifestyle: Exercise of the neck is useful in this condition

History and future
Goitre was previously common in many areas that were deficient in iodine in the soil. For example, in the English Midlands, the condition was known as Derbyshire Neck. In the United States, goiter was found in the Great Lakes, Midwest, and Intermountain regions. The condition now is practically absent in affluent nations, where table salt is supplemented with iodine. However, it is still prevalent in India, Central Asia and Central Africa.

Some health workers fear that a resurgence of goiter might occur because of the trend to use rock salt and/or sea salt, which has not been fortified with iodine.

New research indicates that there may in fact be a tendency to inherit an increased vulnerability to goitre.

Graying of Hair

[amazon_link asins=’B01B3QW5MA,B002QXVY7W’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’finmeacur-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’09ffc30c-0d84-11e7-9d00-d102e82dae98′]

Have you ever watched someone try to cover up gray hair by dyeing it? Or maybe you wonder why your granddad has a full head of silver hair when in old pictures it used to be dark brown? Getting gray, silver, or white hair is a natural part of growing older, and here’s why.

CLICK  & SEE

Each hair on our heads is made up of two parts:
a shaft :- the colored part we see growing out of our heads
a root : – the bottom part, which keeps the hair anchored under the scalp .

CLICK & SEE

The root of every strand of hair is surrounded by a tube of tissue under the skin that is called the hair follicle (say: fah-lih-kul). Each hair follicle contains a certain number of pigment cells. These pigment cells continuously produce a chemical called melanin (say: meh-luh-nin) that gives the growing shaft of hair its color of brown, blonde, red, and anything in between.

Melanin is the same stuff that makes our skin’s color fair or darker. It also helps determine whether a person will burn or tan in the sun. The dark or light color of someone’s hair depends on how much melanin each hair contains.

As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color – like gray, silver, or white – as it grows. As people continue to get older, fewer pigment cells will be around to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will look completely gray.

People can get gray hair at any age. Some people go gray at a young age – as early as when they are in high school or college – whereas others may be in their 30s or 40s before they see that first gray hair. How early we get gray hair is determined by our genes. This means that most of us will start having gray hairs around the same age that our parents or grandparents first did.

Gray hair is more noticeable in people with darker hair because it stands out, but people with naturally lighter hair are just as likely to go gray. From the time a person notices a few gray hairs, it may take more than 10 years for all of that person’s hair to turn gray.

The other big reason for graying hair is the environment. A recent study
indicates that smokers are 4 times more likely to become prematurely gray (or
bald). The mechanism is not clear but may have to do with vessel constriction
caused from the chemical (such as nicotine) absorption . In youngters, vitamin
B-12 deficiency, thyroid imbalance, anemia or viruses can cause gray hair to
appear as well. There is a phenomenon of “going gray” due to a shock or
fright but is not well documented and is hard to explain physiologically.

According to Ayurveda excessive passion, anger and phychic strain results in graying of hair .Persons suffering from chronic cold and sinusitis and those who use warm water for washing there hair are more likely to be victims of this condition.

Ayurvedic Treatments:

Bhringraja and amalaki are popularly used for the treatment of this condition .Medicated oil prepared by boiling these two drugs, viz ,Mahabhringraj taila is used extremely for massaging the head, The powder of these two drugs is also used internally in a dose of one teaspoonful three times daily with milk. The oil prepared from the seeds of the Neem tree is used for inhalation twice a day for about a month. along with this ,the patient should be advised to take only milk as his diet.

Diet : These therapies will be effective only when the patient observes diet restrictions. As far as possible, he should take only milk and sugar. Salt should be avoided. Sour things like yogurt are not useful. Pungent, hot and spicy food should be avoided.

Lifestyle: The patient should not remain awake for along time at night and should be kept free from worry, anxiety and passion. If suffering from cold and sinusitis, prompt and careful treatment should be given. Hot water should never be used for washing the hair. Cold water should always be used for bathing.

Bamboos are a group of woody perennial evergreen plants in the true grass family Poaceae, subfamily Bambusoideae, tribe Bambuseae. Some of its members are giants, forming by far the largest members of the grass family.

There are 91 genera and about 1,000 species of bamboo. They are found in diverse climates, from cold mountains to hot tropical regions. They occur from Northeast Asia (at 50°N latitude in Sakhalin), south throughout East Asia west to the Himalaya, and south to northern Australia. They also occur in sub-Saharan Africa, and in the Americas from the southeast of the USA south to Chile, there reaching their furthest south anywhere, at 47°S latitude. Major areas with no native bamboos include Europe, north Africa, western Asia, northern North America, most of Australia, and Antarctica.

click & see the pictures

Many bamboos are popular in cultivation as garden plants. In cultivation, care needs to be taken of their potential for invasive behavior. They spread mainly through their roots and/or rhizomes, which can spread widely underground and send off new culms to break through the surface. There are two patterns for the spreading of bamboo, “clumping” (monopodial) and “running” (sympodial). Clumping bamboo species tend to spread underground slowly. Swimming bamboo species are highly variable in their tendency to spread; this is related to both the species and the soil and climate conditions. Some can send out runners several meters a year, while others can stay in the same general area for long periods. If neglected, they can be invasive over time and can cause problems by moving into adjacent areas. The reputation of bamboo as being highly invasive is often exaggerated, and situations where it has taken over large areas is often the result of years of untended or neglected plantings.

Once established as a grove, it is difficult to completely remove bamboo without digging up the entire network of underground rhizomes. If bamboo must be removed, an alternative to digging it up is to cut down the culms, and then repeatedly mow down new shoots as they arise, until the root system exhausts its energy supply and dies. If any leaves are allowed to photosynthesize the bamboo survives and will keep spreading.

There are two main ways to prevent the spread of running bamboo into adjacent areas. The first method is rhizome pruning or “edging”, which involves removing any rhizomes escaping the desired bamboo area. Hooks, shovels and picks are usual tools. The rhizomes are generally very close to the surface(just under a sod layer), so, if rhizome pruning is done twice a year, it will sever most, if not all, of the new growth. Some species may be deep running (beyond typical spade depth). These are much harder to control and deeper cuts will need to be made. Regular maintenance will indicate major growth directions and locations. Once the rhizomes are cut they should be removed. If any bamboo shoots come up outside of the bamboo area afterwards their presence indicates the precise location of the missed rhizome. The fibrous roots that radiate from the rhizomes do not grow up to be more bamboo so they stay in the ground.

The second way is by surrounding it with a physical barrier. Concrete and specially rolled HDPE plastic are usual materials. This is placed in a 60-90 cm (2-3 feet) deep ditch around the planting, and angled out at the top to direct the rhizomes to the surface. Strong rhizomes and tools can penetrate plastic barriers with relative ease, so great care must be taken. Bamboo in barriers is much more difficult to remove than free-spreading bamboo. Barriers and edging are unnecessary for clump forming bamboos. Clump forming bamboos may eventually need to have portions taken out if they get too large.

Bamboo leaves And Edible bamboo shoots
Uses:

Culinary uses:

Edible bamboo shoots. The shoots (new bamboo culms that come out of the ground) of bamboo, called zhú sǔn or simply sǔn in Chinese, are edible. They are used in numerous Asian dish and broth, and are available in supermarkets in various sliced forms, both fresh and canned version. Bamboo shoot tips are called zhú sǔn jiān or simply sǔn jiān .

In Indonesia they are sliced thinly and then boiled with santan (thick coconut milk) and spices to make a dish named gulai rebung. Other recipes using bamboo shoots are [sayur lodeh]] (mixed vegetables in coconut milk) and lun pia (sometimes written lumpia: fried wrapped bamboo shoots with vegetables). Note that the shoots of some species contain toxins that need to be leached or boiled out before they can be eaten safely.

Pickled bamboo, used as a condiment, may also be made from the pith of the young shoots.

The sap of young stalks tapped during the rainy season may be fermented to make ulanzi (a sweet wine) or simply made into a soft drink. Zhúyèqīng jiǔ is a green-coloured Chinese liquor that has bamboo leaves as one of its ingredients.

Bamboo leaves are also used as wrappers for zongzi, a steamed dumpling typical of southern China, which usually contains glutinous rice and other ingredients.

Medicinal uses:
Bamboo is used in Chinese medicine for treating infections. It is also a low calorie source of potassium.

Bamboo leaves are aromatic, stimulant and tonic. They are useful in counteracting spasmodic disorders and prevent bleeding. They are also an effective aphrodisiac.

Stomach Disorders:Bamboo leaves are beneficial in the treatment of stomach disorders.Young shoots of bamboo tree are also very useful for this.

Diarrhoea: Bamboo leaves are used in the form of decoction to treat this disease.

Menstrual Disorders: A decoction of bamboo leaves promots and regulates the mensprual periods. A decoction of bamboo nodes stem is also useful for this purpose.

Wounds: A poultice of tender bamboo shoots is used for cleaning wounds and maggot-infested sores.Decoction of fresh bamboo leaves is applied as a medicine in such ulcers.

Respiratory Disorders: The tender bamboo shoots are useful in the treatment of this disease. The bamboo leaves are used in the killing of intestinal worms.,such as thread worms. It should be taken in the form of decoction.

Bamboos have thousands of other uses. It is used as most useful plant from the begining of human culture.

Following the birth of a child, a new mother is often overwhelmed by the tasks of parenthood. Besides adjusting to her new lifestyle, the mother must turn her attention to her own body. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and the growth of the fetus in the uterus have tremendous effects on the mother’s body. The pelvic floor, which is a group of muscles which support the abdominal organs, is often weakened and stretched during pregnancy and childbirth. To restore strength to these muscles a woman must perform a series of exercises..…CLICK & SEE

During the nine months of pregnancy, the woman’s body continues to change and evolve to meet the needs of the unborn baby. However, within weeks after the baby is born, the mother can take steps to enhance the healing in her body. With proper exercise, a new mother can speed her recovery time and simultaneously feel better about herself.

A Post Partum Exercise Regimen

Strengthening of the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles represent the foundation of a post-partum exercise program. During childbirth, the abdominal muscles are often stretched and the pelvic floor muscles traumatized. Although the uterus will return to normal size within six weeks, specific strengthening exercises are required to restore the tone to the abdominal muscles.

Specifically, patients need to practice a series of four exercises designed to promote the strength of the affected muscles. First, identify the pelvic floor muscles by partially emptying the bladder and stopping the urine flow. This exercise promotes the strength of the pelvic floor muscle. Secondly, while laying supine, flatten the stomach and hold for five seconds. (Don’t forget to keep breathing). The third recommended exercise is called the “straight curl up.” To perform this exercise, the woman should lay on the ground with her feet flat on the floor. Then, she should reach forward toward the knees, lifting her shoulders off the floor. During each motion, the woman should pause and slowly return to the starting position. Finally, the diagonal curl up will boost the strength of the abdominal muscles. To perform this exercise, the woman should again rest on the back with the knees flexed and the feet flat. Then, to complete the exercise, the woman must diagonally reach across her body with her right hand extending toward her left knee. Then slowly return to the starting position and resume the exercise, only this time reaching her left hand to her right knee. The performance of these exercises will allow the new mother to restore healthy and strong muscles.

Restoring Back Strength

As a mother gets back on her feet following delivery, moderate exercise is important. Experts often recommend walking (and pushing a stroller) because it restores back strength and posture. During pregnancy and childbirth, the muscles of the back tend to shorten, leading to a rotated pelvis. Physical therapists call this forward rotation a lordosis, “sway-back” position.

To correct this condition after pregnancy, a woman can perform several other exercises. The first exercise referred to as a “bridge,” requires the woman to rest on the back with her knees bent and feet flat. Then, she must gently lift her hips toward the ceiling. A second exercise designed to improve posture center on pelvic tilting. In this exercise, the woman must rest on her back and contract the abdominal muscles while simultaneously flattening the arch of the back into the floor. This exercise will strengthen the abdomen and reduce the possibility of the “sway back” position. Finally, women who just gave birth to a baby must guard against awkward lifting positions that can cause back complications. The mother must instead remember the proper lifting techniques of bending at the knees and keeping the head and chest high. By practicing these and other post partum exercises, women can maintain their health and enjoy their new bundle of joy.

Yoga Exercises under the guidance of some expart is the best way to rejuvenile yourself and mentain good health, mind and soul all along.
